According to the recent announcement, the solos tournament will feature some of Australia’s best Fortnite players, including Kathleen “Loserfruit” Belsten. The event is set to mimic the competitive nature of the Australian Open and will take place on January 26 and 27 during finals weekend.
“Fortnite is a global phenomenon, and we’re excited to host the Grand Slam of competitive gaming events at the Australian Open in January,” Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said. “The Fortnite Summer Smash at the Australian Open will see some of the best gamers from around the country do battle just hours before the world’s best male tennis players compete for the AO title.”
Fortnite fans can register to compete in on-site qualifying events on Saturday, January 26, with winners progressing to the Sunday final.
As we previously reported, Fortnite tournaments have come under fire of late as professional gamers deal with constant changes to in-game items and mechanics. Most recently, Fortnite’s publisher Epic Games pushed a game-altering update hours before the $100,000 WSOE Fortnite Duos tournament.
