According to the announcement, Blizzard’s move to reduce its focus on Heroes of the Storm has significant ramifications for its esports plans. As a result, the Heroes Global Championship and the Heroes of the Dorm, the largest collegiate esports competition in the United States, will not return in 2019.
“The love that the community has for these programs is deeply felt by everyone who works on them, but we ultimately feel this is the right decision versus moving forward in a way that would not meet the standards that players and fans have come to expect,” Blizzard’s J. Allen Brack and Ray Gresko added.
Despite these sweeping changes, Blizzard reassured users that it will continue supporting the game with new heroes, themed events and other content.
This news comes 2 weeks after Blizzard announced a new 3-tiered competitive system for Hearthstone, which will consist of qualifiers, live global tournaments and an exclusive top tier, with more than $4 million in prizes.
