Skillz, a mobile multiplayer gaming platform that features dozens of games, reportedly had a blow out year, with the top-10 players winning more than $8 million in combined prizes. Notably, 7 of the top-10 earners were women.

According to the announcement, the prizes earned by this year’s winners were 3-times larger than that earned by 2017’s top players. This growth corresponds with the rapidly growing mobile gaming industry, which is projected to reach $70 billion in 2019, which accounts for over half of the projected $138 billion total gaming industry.

“When I first started competing on the Skillz platform, I never realized this was something I could do professionally,” Jennifer Park (jpark87), a college engineering student from Michigan, is quoted as saying in Skillz’s year-end report. “The prizes I’ve earned from playing Skillz games have helped put me through college.”

Skillz revealed in September that it doubled its revenue in a matter of 5 months from $200 million to $400 million. In addition to the revenue from its tournaments, Skillz is selling targeted advertising, as well as developers tools for companies looking to integrate Skillz’s gaming infrastructure.

While most of the games on Skillz are currently card-based, trivia, simple shooters or digital board games, the market for mobile esports is quickly becoming more substantial with titles like Clash Royale and Fortnite.
