America’s most infamous figure skater, Tonya Harding, will be played by Margot Robbie in what could be the surprise must-see movie of the year, I, Tonya. It looks absolutely incredible. The Playlist called it “the Goodfellas of figure skating,” so if it sucks we can blame them.
In case you’re new to the figure skating world, it’s fucking cutthroat. The parents are like dance moms mixed with hockey moms, and Harding’s mom was apparently one of the worst. Harding was the girl from the wrong side of the tracks who had all the talent in the world, but was constantly dogged by critics and judges who felt she wasn’t a good representation of their beautiful sport. Her career ended prematurely after she was implicated in the kneecapping of Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, although her actual involvement is a matter of debate.
The haters always say: ‘Tonya tell the truth.’ There’s no such thing as truth. Everyone has their own truth.
I, Tonya seems to have a lot going for it, a great plot, solid casting, and a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. The trailer leads me to believe this film could be a serious Oscar contender. It would be a surprise for sure, as few people are talking about this movie, but it’s definitely possible — I imagine interest will increase as we near the release date.
