GOG, a Poland-based digital distribution platform for video games and films, revealed Friday that SOMA, a science fiction survival horror video game developed and published by Frictional Games, is available for free until December 30.

This is a significant giveaway as SOMA is a highly-rated game, garnering an 84% rating on Metacritic and an 8.1/10 from IGN. The game itself is DRM free, requiring no activation or online connection to play.

The decision to give away SOMA is likely apart of an effort to combat the ramped-up competition facing GOG with Discord and Epic Games entering the digital distribution market.

To that end, GOG recently posted a flowchart diagram depicting the decision process for choosing a distribution platform. Notably, the post depicts GOG, Steam, EA Origin and Blizzard as the top options while also slighting the platforms like Epic Games Store and Twitch.
