A life-sized sperm whale fountain in Harlingen harbor will now spray out a stream of water whenever anyone donates Steem (STEEM), a digital currency that powers the largest social media platform built on the blockchain.

While the whale is designed to spray at random intervals, Steem holders are now able to donate their holdings online to receive an instant spray as a reward. Steem Whale, as it is known, currently stands at 10 meters high and was constructed as one of the 11fountains art projects, with each located in a Dutch city.

SteemWhale operates between 9:30 and 21:30 CEST. Donation can range from 1 to 100 STEEM (currently 1 STEEM = $1.54). If by chance a person’s donation doesn’t result in a spout, it will be returned.

The developer, Roeland P. Lanparty, was initially supposed to write the code for the squirt randomly, but he decided to incorporate blockchain-based payments through the Steem network. This was done as a display for the capabilities for quick transactions.  Lanparty also pointed out that he “found the analogy between the whale fountain and the ‘whale’ slang used to signify wealth in the cryptocurrency community funny.”

The statue is banking on the satisfaction of watching a glorious pillar of water coming out of a giant whale statue being enough to encourage donations, and it likely will be for many crypto enthusiasts. We can likely expect many more blockchain-based art projects like this in the future.
