Civilization VI: GatheringĀ Storm, the second expansion forĀ Civ 6, is set to bring a number of new gameplay dynamics, in addition toĀ 9 new leaders and 8 new civilizations.

Our previous reports highlighted Mali,Ā Hungary,Ā Inca,Ā CanadaĀ and theĀ MāoriĀ as the first civilizations to be announced for the new expansion. Now,Ā Take-Two (TTWO) has revealed that the sixth new civilization will be Sweden, led by Kristina (later baptized Christina Alexandra), who is remembered for her intelligence, patronage and decision to remain unwed. This addition makes usĀ 4 for 6 when it comes to new civ predictions.

According to the official announcement,Ā the Swedish Empire is one of the best civs for achieving a culture or diplomatic victory through its combination of unique abilities and buildings.

The Swedes’ unique improvement, the Open-Air Museum, increases loyalty and boosts culture and tourism for each type of terrain in which at least one Swedish city exists, although you can only build one per city.

Sweden’s unique building is also focused on culture and diplomacy. The Queen’s Bibliotheque is constructed as the second-tier building within the government plaza and provides Great Works slots for writing, music and any type of art. Add to that the fact that Sweden’s unique ability, Nobel Prize, gives bonus Great Engineer points from factories and bonus Great Scientist points from universities, and the civ’s main focus becomes evident.

Kristina has her own unique ability, called Minerva of the North, that grants the Queen’s Bibliotheque and gives a theme to buildings with at least three Great Work slots and wonders with at least two great work slots once the slots are filled.

For their final perk, Sweden gets its own unit. TheĀ Carolean is an anti-calvary unit that is unlocked in the Renaissance era. It replaces the underutilized pike and shot, and boasts faster movement, in addition to increased combat strength for each unused movement point — an interesting twist.

Based on these bonuses, Sweden may be the most likely new civilization to get the second leader implied in the expansion. Kristina’s focus on culture, contrasted with Sweden’s more-obvious scientific and military prowess suggests another famous leader likeĀ Gustavus Adolphus — known as the “father of modern warfare” — orĀ Charles XII would be a fitting addition.

Apart from the new civs and leaders, the game will feature a number of new and improved game elements, including advanced technologies, engineering projects and the return of the World Congress. Notably,Ā Gathering StormĀ will be the first game in the franchise to introduce a living world ecosystem that “showcases natural events that could enrich or challenge your growing empire.”
